Nabov The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is used to investigate the dual-scale problem of fluid flow through three-dimensional multifilament woven fabrics. Such fabrics are characterized by two distinct length scales: the thickness of a single filament and the thickness of a bundle of filaments, known as yarn. The yarn’s thickness is typically two orders of magnitude greater than that of a single filament. The inter-yarn and intra-yarn spaces, through which fluid may flow, are also of two distinct length scales. The direct simulation of fluid flow in multifilament woven fabrics involves the simultaneous resolution of the flow field in the inter-yarn and intra-yarn pores; the LBM is well-suited to modelling such geometrically-complex fluid flow. The methodology is first validated against published analytical results for twodimensional transverse fluid flow through hexagonal arrays of cylinders; the agreement is excellent. Fluid flow in two-dimensional representations of multifilament woven fabrics is also simulated, and the results are compared against those obtained following Papathanasiou’s approach (2001, Int. J. Multiphase Flow, 27: 1451–1461); the agreement is very good. The model is then used to determine the through-thickness permeability of three-dimensional woven fabrics by direct simulation of the fluid flow. The geometry used for the three-dimensional simulations resembles bi-axial, plain woven fabrics. The inter-yarn porosity (‘weave porosity’, /w) and the intra-yarn porosity (‘yarn porosity’, /y) are systematically varied in the range 0:3 6 /w 6 0:65 and 0 6 /y 6 0:80, respectively. These parameters control the weave and yarn permeabilities (Kw and Ky). The influence of these parameters on the effective permeability of the fabric, Kp, is quantified and discussed in terms of the fabric structure. Our results are analyzed following the approach developed by Papathanasiou (2001, Int. J. Multiphase Flow, 27: 1451–1461) for two-dimensional structures. The semi-empirical relationship between the fabric permeability and the weave and yarn permeabilities proposed in that study provides an excellent fit to the data produced by our three-dimensional simulations, with only minor adjustment to the fitting parameters. The parameterized relationship we obtain allows the through-thickness permeability of a three-dimensionalwoven fabric to be predicted if theweave and yarn permeabilities are known. 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Redistribution of Fibers in the Structure of Hollow Ring Spun Yarn

Core yarn was spun by introducing a PVA multifilament as the core through the yarn forming zone of a ring spinning frame and viscose fibers as the sheath containing tracer fibers. The water soluble PVA multifilament was extracted from the yarn structure. Then internal structure and properties of the hollow ring yarn was assessed and compared with those of typical ring yarns. Also, two plain fab...

Study on heat and moisture vapour transmission characteristics through multilayered fabric ensembles

The present paper reports a detailed study on heat and moisture vapour transmission characteristics of different types of multilayered fabric ensembles. Two sets of multilayered fabrics have been prepared. In first set, two types of carded web produced from acrylic and polyester fibres with five different areal densities in each fibre type have been used as middle layer. In second set, differen...

Investigations on the Reinforcement of Mechanical Properties of Gypsum Composites Containing E-glass Woven Fabrics

Glass fiber reinforced gypsum composites are new building materials that have been used in covering interior walls. Reinforcement by means of woven fabrics as a three dimensional material is an alternative to the use of short fibers. The application of appropriate fabrics can improve mechanical properties of gypsum composites. The aim of this research article is to investigate the effect of the...

Effect of Specimen History on Structure and In-Plane Permeability of Woven Fabrics

Before being processed into composites, reinforcement fabrics may undergo repeated involuntary deformation, the complete sequence of which is here referred to as specimen history. To mimic its effect, fabric specimens were subjected to sequences of defined shear operations. For single fabric layers with unconstrained thickness, quantitative evaluation of photographic image data indicated that r...

Multifunctional non-woven fabrics of interfused graphene fibres

Carbon-based fibres hold promise for preparing multifunctional fabrics with electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, permeability, flexibility and lightweight. However, these fabrics are of limited performance mainly because of the weak interaction between fibres. Here we report non-woven graphene fibre fabrics composed of randomly oriented and interfused graphene fibres with strong inter...
